As India was under British rule at that time so India gate was designed as typical Triumphal Arch similar to Europe and is usually compared to Arc de Triomphe from Paris.  It is located in the centre of Delhi directly connected to the Rajpath on the ceremonial axis of the city.

Rather than just being celebrated as the largest war museums of India, it is also a major picnic spot for Delhiites and tourists alike. The arch is surrounded by a lush green garden which is most visited during the monsoon and winter season in Delhi. On India’s Independence Day on 15th August and Republic Day on 26th January, India Gate is lit up with tricolour lights. In the famous republic day parade, India Gate at Rajpath is the centre of attraction as the parade passes through here. If you’re in Delhi during Republic Day, buy a ticket and grab a seat at Rajpath to witness the culture of India.

Various events are organized in the India Gate’s garden including the famous on International Yoga Day attended by PM Modi himself.

India Gate usually fills up with tourists in evenings and till late nights. The entry to arch is not charged and thus is one of the most famous things to do in Delhi for free. An important point to note here is that India Gate’s entry closes at 10:00 PM  sharp. Although the gardens going towards the Rajpath still remains accessible. Therefore, despite the closing time of 10:00 PM, India Gate still retains its hustle and bustle.

It was added to the archway of the India Gate triumphal arch. This structure was added in tribute to the soldiers who fought in the Bangladesh liberation war from Pakistan in 1971.
