The Dominican Republic Government has released COVID-19 cases for its tourist areas of the country to promote tourism and the low infection rates.
According to the government, the country's main tourist epicenter of Punta Cana had only 5 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the last week.
The bulletin was released by Dominican authorities to demonstrate the low incidence of COVID-19 in tourist areas which accounted for less than 1% of the country's infections in the past 7 days.
Between September 4th and September 20th the Ministry of Health stated that 1,829 rapid COVID-19 tests were carried out on passengers arriving at the airport and only 2 were positive.
The Dominican Republic has five main tourist areas that accounted for only 36 infections in the last week “which shows a much lower level of risk in these locations.” according to the bulletin.
The country has recently made its COVID-19 entry requirements much easier for travelers dropping the mandatory COVID-19 PCR test. Travelers are still subject to random breath tests on arrival but do not need to be tested before they arrive.
After seeing the success of tourism in areas like Cancun with no entry requirements, the Dominican Republic took a page out of Mexico's play book by not only dropping the COVID-19 PCR testing, but took it one step further by adding free medical insurance that covers COVID-19 for tourists.
The Dominican Republic recovered 21.9% of its international arrivals in July receiving 135,163 foreign tourists compared to 591,348 in July of 2019.
With the high season quickly approaching, the country's authorities are ensuring that they are doing everything possible to lure potential travelers from the U.S. and Canada.
Millions of North Americans flock to southern destinations every winter to escape the cold including Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. With less travelers expected this winter due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Dominican Republic authorities have worked hard to stay front and center in the media with multiple tourism promotions and “low infections rates” in tourist areas.
